Myst Online: Uru Live is a massively multiplayer online game developed by Cyan Worlds and spinoff game in the Myst video game franchise. Although Uru and the Myst series share the theme of the D'ni civilization and culture, Uru takes place in the present day, as if the entire story of the Myst saga were discovered to be true. Unlike previous games where the player character's history, physical appearance, etc. are omitted, Uru allows avatar customization so that "you are you". The gameplay is more sophisticated than in previous Myst games, and the graphics are in real-time 3D (as they are in realMyst) rather than being pre-rendered stills.

Cyan Worlds, Inc. has put most of the program code sources for Myst Online: Uru Live into open source. This includes the code for the client, tools and python scripts. With these sources you can find out how MOUL ticks. And with the MOSS server, fans can set up and run Myst Online: Uru Live on their own servers, in addition to the Cyan Worlds Myst Online: Uru Live servers.

The 3D models and textures that were used to create Myst Online: Uru Live will not be part of the open source license. We will probably release some of these models and textures, but under a different license than the code source.

The grand hope is that you fan developers will create fixes, improvements, new Ages and new game play, that will keep Uru alive. Thanks!

The root repository that contains what is running on the Cyan Worlds servers is at:
CWE - client and tools
MOULSCRIPT - python scripts for MOUL

There are (at least) two places where you can view, get, collaborate and explore the released open sources and it's branches:

Presumably (and hopefully) by leaving the game-play largely untouched and expanding it. I can see how t would work, so long as they allow for player interaction to serve a meaningful purpose. Otherwise it's just going to end up as a gimmick.

Having players dressed in modern clothes though? Oh dear... We've all seen Atrus and the D'ni and the way they dress, why should that be changed? The Myst games have always had clear artistic styles which shouldn't be broken like this! It may seem like a trivial point to raise but the player character in Myst is an intrepid explorer (Otherwise there's no way he'd have ridden that cable car!) not a tourist!

How do you turn a series of first-person puzzle games into an MMO?
